明治末期，斩杀了大浜老大太田黑伊藏后入狱的年轻头目南条武（市川雷藏），因大正天皇御大典的恩赦，时隔六年出狱。然而在南条武不在的期间，大浜已面目全非，如今从九州流窜而来的中新门勇吉（神田隆），在政界实力派堀越传三郎（内田朝雄）的庇护下，抢占了南条组的地盘，行事十分过分。而且南条组的直次郎已死于中新门之手。南条武出狱后，南条一家顿时有了生气，大家急于为直次郎报仇，但南条武讲述了自己在狱中领悟到的黑帮营生的虚无，宣称要改过自新。前来南条家帮忙的阿芳（坪内美喜子），被这样的南条武深深吸引。南条武前往料亭“花菱”拜访勇吉，告知对方自己要金盆洗手，开始做掮客生意。老板娘京子（朝丘雪路）瞥见南条武的身影，为他出狱感到高兴，但因自己如今成了堀越的情妇而感到羞耻，不愿与他相见。
